TRANSITIONS
IS BACK
Jeremy Druker
We are proud to announce the launch of Transitions
Online <www.transitions-online.org>,
an Internet publication covering political and social
issues in Central and Eastern Europe and the former
Soviet Union. Our September issue, Ready to
Blow, focuses on the regions simmering ethnic
and political conflictsmost of them legacies of the
Soviet Unions collapseand Russias
direct or indirect role in financing, arming, or
peacekeeping.
Transitions Online is a nonprofit new
media venture built on the excellent reputation of our
predecessor, the print version of Transitions
magazine, which was renowned for its local perspectives
on issues impacting the region. Influential
newspapers such as The New York Times, The
Washington Post, and The International Herald
Tribune have all praised how Transitions
magazine created a window into this dynamic region.
In addition to being a reliable source of quality
coverage, Transitions was a leading force for
independent journalism in former communist countries and
provided previously unheard local voices with an
international audience.
Using our network of local correspondents, Transitions
Online leads off each month with a selection of
articles focusing on a particular theme with broad
regional impact. Throughout the rest of the month,
we regularly post opinion pieces, media articles, and
other feature stories. Our sitewhich already
receives nearly 10,000 visitors a monthwill soon
expand to include Real Audio, an advanced search engine,
enhanced discussion groups, and a new Digital Kiosk with
links to hundreds of regional media sources. Future
additions to our editorial coverage will include a Week
in Review section and Country Files, which will contain
detailed background information with regularly updated
economic, social, and political indicators. We will
also include a Whos Who of influential
personalities throughout the region. Finally, our
Analytical Forum will publicize academic and public
research, creating an online community of experts.
With our headquarters in Prague, Transitions
Online sits exactly at the point where East meets
Westready to be the political, economic, and
societal bridge between the two, providing the most
comprehensive coverage and deep analysis on one
easy-to-navigate site, and offering a unique resource for
your daily studies and work. Content and technology
combine to make Transitions Online a powerful
tool for students as well as professionals who want to
increase their knowledge about the region, and use it to
their advantage. Dont let the dynamic transition of
this vital region leave you behind.

Please note that Transitions Online is not an
e-mail newsletter, though we plan on developing in the
coming months an e-mail distribution service for our
articles (for those with poor or no connection to the
World Wide Web).
