Rules relaxed on use of Romanian-language on TV.
Contrary to earlier reports, live TV broadcasts and
reports relayed from live event locations will not have
to be translated into Romanian, according to an amended
version of the Romanian National Audio-Visual
Council’s (CNA) previous decision.
Two weeks ago the CNA determined that television and
radio programmes broadcast in any language other than
Romanian would also have to be conveyed in the Romanian
language by way of captions or simultaneous translations,
even if live broadcasts are involved.
The RMDSZ [Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania;
UDMR in Romanian] registered a strong protest against the
decision, while radio and television broadcast stations
affected by the ruling called attention to the fact that
the obligation imposed by the CNA would not only place
them in absurd situations, but would make it practically
impossible for the stations to continue their
operations.
The council has “refined” its previous
decisions and has stated that the rule would apply only
to television programmes, and that Romanian captions
would have to be added to live televisions broadcasts
only if these were recorded and the recording was
broadcast again. Recorded television programmes in
languages other than Romanian had to be translated into
Romanian even before the February decision of the
CNA.
