Cable Television Operators are Unhappy with the New Telcommunications Law.

The New Telecommunications Law strengthened the existing Lietuvos Telecomas (“LT”) monopoly in the field of supplying cable television services.  The new law was crafted for a new strategic investor:  Swedish/Finnish telecommunications consortium, which privatized LT in mid-1998.  Before privatization, the majority of cable television operators had an agreement with the state-owned enterprise LT to rent (or lease) underground ducts, channels, wells, collectors, towers, etc.  The new owner, in control of all infrastructure and being in a dominant position, may pose a serious threat to small and medium cable operators.
