BULGARIA

I.  Bulgarian TV planning satellite service via Eutelsat.

“Arrangements for transmission of Bulgarian National Television Channel 1 by satellite should be made by the middle of this year at the latest,” said committee of posts and telecommunications president Antoni Slavinski.  He attended a working meeting in Paris with the management of the European telecommunications satellite organization (Eutelsat).
The possibility to transmit Channel 1 by Eutelsat’s powerful Hot Bird 1 to 5 satellites from 13 degrees east was discussed at the meeting.  The Hot Birds deliver nearly 400 TV channels into more than 70 million cable and satellite homes in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.
At Eutelsat’s headquarters, the leadership of the committee of posts and telecommunications were familiarized with all possible technical options for implementation of the project and the respective rates.  At first, analogue transmission will most probably be used for the signal and the far more modern digital options will be adopted later on, Slavinski explained.
Bulgaria’s participation in Eutelsat and the possibility of having a satellite channel of its own are an absolute must, now that almost all countries of Europe have done so, Eutelsat director-general Giuliano Berretta told the Bulgarian National Television correspondent in Paris.
Bulgaria joined Eutelsat as a full member in May 1996 after the national assembly ratified the Eutelsat convention on 8th March 1996.  The Bulgarian telecommunications company has been designated signatory to the Eutelsat operating agreement.
