ARMENIA

I.  Higher charges for Armenian TV frequencies.

The quality of television and radio broadcasting in Armenia may be raised by restricting entry to this market, Minister of Post and Telecommunications of the Republic of Armenia Artak Vardanyan thinks.
In an interview to AR television company, the minister said that tariffs for the use of frequencies, which so far have just been symbolic, will be raised.  He also thinks that raising frequency tariffs may be important for boosting the television advertising market.  The minister said that it was preferable to have three powerful television channels rather than 50 small, poor-quality ones.  “This market requires some investment and you cannot enter it with one or two people and a video camera,” he said. . . .  The minister also noted that the frequencies will be differentiated, in particular, in big cities they will be higher than in small towns.
