Moscow Media Law and Policy Institute

The Moscow Media Law and Policy Institute intends to start operations approximately February 1.  Its offices will, initially, be housed at the Faculty of Journalism, MGU.  Andrei Richter, the associate editor of this Newsletter and the editor of the Russian edition, will be the initial director.

The Media Law and Policy Institute will conduct a seminar again this summer for law and journalism faculty in the former Soviet Union interested in teaching media law.  This year, under the direction of Peter Krug, University of Oklahoma, a draft casebook on the subject will be prepared.

The MLPI will also begin work in the area of "commercial media law," encompassing intellectual property, entertainment law, and contract law involving the licensing of programs for radio and television.

Under a USAID grant, administered by Internews and the Center for War, Peace and the News Media at New York University, the MLPI will use the above methods, together with conferences, publications and the expansion of the Newsletters, to help foster a freer and more independent press through improved administration of the rule of law in the media field.
