MacArthur Foundation Awards

        The MacArthur Foundation has announced the results of its first annual competition for grants to individuals for research and writing projects within the former Soviet Union.  Among the 102 grants, altogether totalikng slightly more than $1 million were a small group for media projects.  These include:

  • Pavel Semenovich Gutiontov, Committee of Defense of Freedom of Speech and Journalists’ Rights, Moscow: $6,000 for ten months for “The Corridors of the Fourth Power.”

  • Aleksei Il’ich Miller, Institute of Slavic Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow: “Formulation of Images of Russia in the Ukrainian Press and Images of Ukraine in the Russian Press after the Breakup of the USSR,” $7,400 over 14 months. 

  • Elena Nikoaevna Strukova, Russian State Public Historical Library, Moscow: “Views of Russian Political and Public Organizations in the Independent Press Media,”  $12,000 over 12 months. 

  • Andrei Pavlovich Vakulenko, Pedagogical Community, Raduga, Moscow:  Methods and Technology of Using Mass Media for Non-profit Organizations in the CIS,” $7,122. over 12 months.

  • Valerii Federovich Davydov, Insititute of USA and Candadian Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow:  “Mass Media and Nuclear Non-Proliferation,” $10,000 over 14 months.
