Media Assistance Miscellany

       The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, which has established an office in Moscow, has announced a funding initiative that includes funds for the development of an independent media.  Grants are primarily for individuals, groups, and institutions within the territory of the former Soviet Union.  There are three areas: research and writing grants for individuals, a fund for foreign travel and special project grants (which can be in collaboration among institutions including partners from outside the former Soviet Union).  For further information, contact: Andrew C.        The Center for Foreign Journalists has announced the Knight International Press Fellowships.  Sponsored by the Knight Foundation, this program will select approximately twenty American journalists and news executives to spend from one to nine months abroad with a special emphasis on the former Soviet republics.  The fellows will do teaching, consulting and training in conjunction with local media centers.  The program will pay expenses and provide a stipend.  For information, contact the CFJ, 11690-A Sunrise Valley Dr., Reston, VA 22901.

       The Commission on Radio and Television Policy has dispatched a working party, including its Executive Director, Professor Ellen Mickiewicz, and Michael J. O’Neill, former editor of The New York Daily News, to Moscow for sessions on television coverage of elections, politics, and the media, particularly those of December 1.  The group’s work grows out of the Commission’s publication Television and Elections (by Mickiewicz and Charles Firestone), published last year in Russian and English.  Copies can be gained from the Commission’s office at the International Media Program, P.O.
